Studio Tour: Artist Nadia Hassan

Name: Nadia Hassan
Location: Greensboro, NC
Profession: Freelance artist, designer + illustrator

What do you create in this space?
Illustrations and patterns, using both digital and analog techniques.
Favorite part about your space?
All the pops of color!

If this room were a song what would it be?
Probably “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – like the song, this space is upbeat, kinda silly, a little over the top, and full of thrifted goodness.
Where did you draw inspiration?
Willy Wonka’s “Chocolate Room,” the “I Spy” picture books I was obsessed with as a child, and a desire to remove as many boundaries as possible between work and life and play.

What is one thing we wouldn’t know about this room from just looking at it?
My studio takes up the entire first floor of my townhouse-style apartment! My living space upstairs is as neutral and calming as the studio is a visual explosion. Gotta have balance 🙂
Best way to enjoy this space?
Taking in the morning stillness, when the day is full of possibilities, and sunlight hits the crystals in the window, filling the room with rainbows. Preferably with a cup of coffee and a pastry.

If you had to pick one, what design element stands out as your favorite?
The polka dot wall, made with removable vinyl wallpaper printed through Spoonflower.
Give it to us straight, what’s still in-progress about your space?
Finding adequate storage for my always-expanding stash of art and art supplies. There were so many piles of things that were moved out of view for the glamour shots.

In your book, what makes a space beautiful?
When it feels thoughtfully curated but still lived-in and homey, and authentic to its inhabitant(s). Bonus points for lots of natural light, and bold use of color and pattern.
What item can’t you live without?
My Leuchtturm dot grid notebook that I use for bullet journaling – my whole life/brain is logged in that thing, and I’d be lost without it.

What makes this space feel like home to you?
All of my happy plants – I am convinced they make the biggest difference.
